Evaluating technical-support products involves more and more parameters
Personalizing technical-support products requires the participation of expert professionals from different specialities with different training backgrounds and perspectives working and collaborating as a team, given that this will produce more rewarding results than if each one works separately. Support products must be evaluated from a multidisciplinary perspective, which requires the knowledge and skills of a wide range of experts, e.g. IT experts, physiotherapists, speech and occupational therapists and social workers.
- Physiotherapists control and adapt patients' sitting positions, movements and transfers, depending on each individual's motor level. They help the other professionals decide on the kind of orthopaedic support product each person requires.
- Occupational therapists evaluate the level of dependence and autonomy in a person's activities of daily living and indicate, when necessary, the appropriate technical support and/or adaptation required. They also evaluate patients' manual functions and control, their access to a computer and control of their environment.
- Speech therapists evaluate issues of communication, language and speech, and intervene in decisions concerning the use of alternative communication and technical-support systems. They also evaluate IT resources in order to make any adaptations that are necessary in terms of communication and written language.
- Social workers provide the link between the family and the team of professionals and at all times evaluate the needs of the dependent person and his/her family. They provide information about the aid available from the different administrations and help manage it.
- IT experts configure and adapt the material, resources and computer system the evaluation team considers appropriate in each case. They look for new solutions to provide the required functions and personalization.
The close collaboration between these professionals and the synergies that stem from them are what really provide added value to technical-support diagnostics.
Finally, a scientific committee composed of specialists and the members of the multidisciplinary team will set the assistence guidelines and study the cases that need scientific advice.
